PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES

1. Children's Library
Loo Niva has been running a children's library in Khokana VDC of Lalitpur district where it was founded in 1994. The initial phase was with cooperation from CWIN . It has also been supported by Khokana VDC and World Vision International Nepal. It is one of the happening centres in Khokana for children and youths. The library has been greatly upgraded and made more functional. But still , it needs more resources and attention to be at standard with the changing times . Currently two part time Librarians are active for the smooth running of Library in the evenings when the children are back from the school .

Net Library

The long term development goal of this project is to impart computer education and skills and accessibility of computer to underprivileged children in rural areas of Nepal. The immediate objective of the project 2006-2007 was to provide children and women in six semi rural VDCs (Khokana, Bungamati, Chalnakhel, Chhampi, Setidevi and Sainbu) computer education and internet proficiency that enhance and broaden their academic and life skills.

It is also planning to provide a creative and interactive learning environment serving as a Internet library and Information Resource Centre in coming days.

2. Education Support programme

In 2005, Loo Niva started an Education Support Programme in the surrounding Lalitpur and Kathmandu VDCs . The aim of the programme is to enhance children's right to education by providing education sponsorships to underprivileged and disadvantaged children. The programme initiated in 2005 with 36 children enrolled in the programme from 5 different VDCs of Lalitpur (Khokana, Bungamati, Setidevi, Sunakothi and Thecho). Over these years the programme has expanded significantly, and currently (2010) 260 children from 19 schools from 11 different VDCs in Kathmandu Valley are directly benefiting from the ESP. While the individual scholarships (the Finnish sponsors) are the main thrust of the programme, other components include the promotion of Child Clubs in all schools, as well as various interaction and programmes are conducted in the communities too. The programme is financially supported by Interpedia, Finland. ESP has also been able to mobilize 19 local individual sponsors for financial support. This is certainly a significant achievement of community participation and numbers are increasing every year . It is the awareness raised by Loo Niva in the communities that we could also help our own children.

3. Promoting Quality Education "Hamro Maitri Shikshya"

Many of the students like in other rural parts of Nepal ,the Project area of Khokana, Bungamati and Sainbu Villages ,suburban in Kathmandu Valley faces the common problems and leave school before finishing their basic education studies. This dropout rate and dismal performance of schools towards education system, the inflexible government school system making passive teaching learning has been recognized to be the development problem within this Project frame. . There are plenty reasons for this reality.

The activities of this Project for 3 years project duration 2008 to 2010 tried to tackle some of them. During the Project, the awareness of community towards the education of their children was strengthened by mobilizing them and giving the parents literacy classes. The management of school improved with School Management Committee (SMC), strengthening Parents Teacher Associations (PTA). Teachers were trained to improve the quality of education and to make school environment more school friendly. Children had opportunities to express themselves through child clubs. It also worked with the line agencies in close conjunction with the government and education bodies. Through these activities the objective of this Project; improved quality of education through increased commitment of children, parents and community towards children’s education was achieved.

With the learnings, the project has been scaled up naming “Hamro Maitri Shikshya “ Primary Education Development project for 2011-2013. The project aims to improve the motivation and teaching skills of teachers and earn respect towards primary teachers to help to provide healthy and good school environment to children. In order to do this school environment needs to be developed, retention rate increased and public schools in project area need to have healthy and child friendly school environment and teaching learning as their priority of the first five grades of primary school . During the project, the awareness of teachers, community and other stakeholders towards the education issues will be strengthened. Also school infrastructure and learning environment will be developed more child friendly by providing adequate trainings on health, environmental and child development issues and promoting child participation in every step of this project to enable children to take more active role in their own education.
